Is SAP HANA a column or row-oriented database?

Overview

Usually, relational databases use data storage based on rows. SAP HANA supports both row and column-based storage. SAP HANA stores data primarily in columnar format for processing. However, unlike other columnar databases, HANA's columnar store is used effectively for all database operations, such as read and write. In SAP, most of the tables in the database are columnar oriented tables which include both transactional and master data tables.
