What causes this issue?

The customer has not been maintained for this particular sales area.

System Response

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

How to fix this error?

Check which sales area the customer has been maintained for.
Note that in Customizing for Sales, it is possible to define common
distribution channels and divisions for the master data.
