What causes this issue?

The system needs to know the controlling area or company code in order
to check the profit center master data.

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

The function terminated.

How to fix this error?

Enter a company code or a controlling area.
If this is not possible, the system probably encountered an error while
calling up the function module KE_PROFIT_CENTER_CHECK. In that case
contact your system administrator.
