Cannot maintain color for distr. curve &1, version &2; see long text

What causes this issue?

You cannot maintain color for the distribution curve for one of the
following reasons:
The distribution curve was not created using individual characteristic
type color.
The distribution curve was created using characteristic profile which
does not contain variant creating characteristics of type color.

System Response

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
